  • Yes, Eclipse is probably the most popular IDE available for Java development. But in my eyes, it is also the one with the most bugs. Working every day with it, there randomly happen strange things that either require a project clean, closing and reopening of a project, up to restarting the whole IDE – for at least three major releases!

Then, there is the “plugin hell”. Yes, there are definitely a lot of very useful plugins, and I want them all! Sadly, they often cause conflicts. One plugin bundles another one (Oracle bundles Spring IDE for example), but a third plugin bundles it in another version, too. And BOOM, at least one of the plugins does not work correctly. It is absolutely horrible.

The interesting thing is, that I never encountered such bugs within Netbeans. Although I like SWT apllications more than Netbeans and although there are better plugins for Eclipse, I would prefer Netbeans for most of my tasks. It does not look that polished than Eclipse, and it might sometimes feel like an old, grey woman – but it does not make me insane with bugs that I am faced to. And that is the biggest plus for Netbeans.

Needless to say, that every professional developer who has a valid IntelliJ licence will only shake his head when he reads my concerns about Eclipse. IntelliJ is a fantastic product and definitely worth its money for any IT professional developing Java applications.

To 4) and 5) I cannot say anything cause I never used them.

    • Marcus, I’m fully agree with you. Since I moved to Netbeans years ago I really find no plausible reason to change. Indeed Eclipse is extremely popular and have lot of plugin but since we are using mostly JEE (with some jquery and others handy libraries) for our development, Netbeans is definitely the best IDE for us.

  • Nice list. where is the content?

  • Wow! You missed the one largest commercially available Java IDEs, MyEclipse. Here, I’ll even source it for you since you missed what many consider to be a best in class tool.

    MyEclipse ranking.

    • I can’t say I agree with you. I have never found an article that mentioned MyEclipse as a best in class tool. The article that you posted doesn’t even say this. Actually eclipse is the most used IDE and sadly I have to agree with the first 2 commentors that it is the most buggy, this also means that MyEclipse will suffer and does from some of the same bugs. I have used both MyEclipse and Eclipse.

  • My biggest problem with netbeans is that it is not TDD friendly enough. Because of this, I prefer eclipse.

  • I think IntelliJ IDEA is easily the best Java IDE. Eclipse has a lot more plugins on offer though and it is easy to get the quality of a plugin improved thanks to the community. I switched from Eclipse to IntelliJ when I started doing some Groovy/Grails but now will switch back to Eclipse thanks to Scala :)

  • IntelliJ is by far the best, hands down. I used Eclipse for four years and was grateful to have anything when I worked for an employer who wouldn’t pay for tools. But I was shown IntelliJ six years ago, and I’ve never gone back. It’s a great tool that only gets better with time.

  • I’ll go with STS a better of all.

  • Hi All, the MUST to have is Intellij, simple easy very fast, perfect integration with MAVEN and extermly usefull when working with SPRING, Intellij is the BEST…thx

  • I spent several years using IntelliJ before being “encouraged” to move to Eclipse a couple of years back. The combination of price (free) and plug-in support makes Eclipse the safe bet but I look back on IntelliJ with very fond memories. IntelliJ helped accelerate development without getting in my way whereas Eclipse seems a sluggish beast which holds me up while it figures out what’s best for me.
